Nelson Abbott enlisted as a Private in Company A of the Reorganized Fourth Michigan Infantry on August 24, 1864, for 3 years of service, at Woodbridge, Wayne County, Michigan. He mustered into Federal service on August 29, 1864. Nelson died of disease (chronic diarrhea) on August 14, 1865, at Crittendon General Hospital, in Louisville, Kentucky.
He married Mary Foster Abbott on August 4, 1837. Their children were Josephine, Francis, Marshall, Philender, and Polly.
