Philander was the son of Aaron and Polly Abbott. In 1850, Philander was living with his mother, Polly, and siblings Lemon and Benjamin and sister-in-law Sally in Ripley, Huron County. They had come to Ohio between 1833 and 1836. Philander first married Huldah Carpenter on 3 January 1855 in Huron County and they had a daughter Emily. Following Huldah's death, he married Mary Louisa Fisher on 1 August 1858 in Franklin County, and they had four children: Margaret Ellen, Madge, Maude, and Parson Moody. Philander was a farmer and sawyer. He died from heart disease.
