Mary Courtney Knight Strickland, 85, born c1854, one of Brantley County's pioneer citizens, died Saturday, Dec. 29, at her home in Hortense.
She was a daughter of the late Abraham Nathaniel Knight and Harriett Raulerson Knight.
Her husband, John J. Strickland, preceded her in death in 1907. Mrs. Strickland spent her life in the Hortense vicinity.
Survivors include nine sons, Jim, Joe, Frank, Nelson, George and Willie Strickland of Hortense, Worry L. Strickland of Brunswick, Marvin Strickland of Corbin, KY, and Norris Strickland of Waycross; three daughters, Mrs. Riley Howard of Waycross; Mrs. Lacy Allen of Hortense, and Mrs. Jewel Goddard of Milledgeville; a brother, Flenoy Knight of Miami, FL; 66 grandchildren; 101 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Hortense Methodist Church on Tuesday, Jan. 2, conducted by the Rev. Frank Harris. Burial was at the Hortense Cemetery.
