Obed Dennis, a prominent farmer of east of town was found dead in a field near his home [the old Howell Finnell farm] last Friday afternoon about 6 o'clock. Mr. Dennis had gone to the field to plow corn. He was seen at work in the afternoon, but later was missed from the field and a search was instituted by relatives, which resulted in the finding of his lifeless body. He had driven to the field in a wagon and when found his team had been unhitched from the cultivator and were standing near the wagon. Mr. Dennis' body was found about half way between the wagon and a tree nearby, and it is supposed as he became ill he sought the shade of the tree, and was fatally stricken, before he reached it. Funeral services were conducted at Pleasant Wood church, Sunday afternoon by Rev. A. J. Robb, assisted by Rev. R. L. Wolverton, and burial was in the Finnell cemetery east of town. The day of the funeral was the 45th anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis'wedding. [Salisbury Press Spectator, reprinted in the Marceline Journal-Mirror, 27 Jul 1928, Fri ·Page 3].
