Douglas attended elementary school in Alliance, Nebraska and secondary school in New Mexico Military School. In 1947 he and his brother, Thomas Barge Hord, both entered the University of Nebraska from where Douglas graduated. Douglas married Nancy Howey on December 15, 1949 and they
lived in Grand Island and at Lakeside Ranch. He and Nancy had the following children:
