He was the son of John McCallie and Mary McCullough. He married Mary Alexander Hooke on December 26, 1831 in Maryville, Blount Co., TN. When nineteen years old he began a mercantile career and in 1840 moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee where he was one of the earliest business men. Although he had a common school of education, he operated a store, flour mill and other industries. He served in the War of 1812 and was a colonel in the Tennessee Militia.
