Robert J. Brown, 89, a resident of Naples, Fla., formerly of Erie, Pa. passed away quietly at his summer home in Erie, surrounded by his family, on November 04, 2007.

Grandpa Brown, the nickname everyone knew and referred to him by, was born in Erie, PA. Jan. 27, 1918. He is the son of late William and Elizabeth ("Sadie") Kantz Brown. He loved attending Mount Calvary RC Church when in Erie. He proudly served his Country in the US Navy during WWII as a torpedo man on the USS O'Bannon (DD 450). Among other commendations, he was awarded the Silver Star and 2 Bronze Stars.

Like many boys his age, he quit school during the depression years to help his family. He told many stories of picking tomatoes for $.15 an hour, which he said was "Big Money" back then. Bob, a man who could do anything, worked successfully in a number of occupations, and retired in 1977 after serving 23 years as a City of Erie Firefighter. In 1981, he fulfilled his childhood dream and attended Naples High School, and at the age of 63, earned his high school diploma.
