BIOGRAPHY :
The son of Anthony Bernard & Rachel (Adams) Smith, in 1860 he and his siblings lived together as farmers in Mount Pleasant Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, but their parents are absent from that census. He stood 5' 9" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted as a substitute for his brother Francis Smith and mustered into federal service at Chambersburg April 7, 1865, as a private with Co. C, 98th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 29, 1865. As he told the army his correct age (17), he must have had parental permission to enlist. PLEASE NOTE that he never served with the 89th Pennsylvania Infantry as erroneously claimed in the accompanying obituary.
He married Catherine L. Overbaugh January 29, 1867, at Conewago Chapel, Adams County, and fathered Rebecca Agnes (b. 01/28/68 - married James C. Lawrence), Anne Margaret (b. 08/19/69 - married Frank Martin), Mary V. (b. 12/26/70), Genevieve (b. 09/21/74), Martin (b. 05/21/76), Loretta (b. 1878), and Elizabeth Catherine (b. 02/06/82 - married Felix Vincent Staub). He died at age 67-10-17 from "general arteriosclerosis [and] mitral & aortic insufficiency."
