Joseph G. Smith was born on February 20, 1846 to Anthony B. and Rachel (Adams) Smith in Adams County, Pennsylvania. He was baptized the next day at Conewago Chapel.
He married Sarah "Sallie" Hendricks (born about 1855 in MD, died between 1880-1884 in MD) and had Francis J. (1875-1945), Rev. John Alphonsus (1878-1944), and Mary C. Smith (Dec. 1880-?). After his first wife passed he married Rosalia Bridget Sheridan (1850-1932), daughter of John and Ann Sheridan, who were Irish immigrants to Maryland. They were the parents of Ann (1884-1906).
"Joseph G. Smith, 67 years old, former justice of the peace at Mount Savage, Md., died Monday night. He went to Mount Savage about 40 years ago to become principal of the schools. He is survived by two sone, the Rev. John A. Smith, assistant pastor of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, this city, and Francis J. Smith, McKeesport, Pa., and one daughter, Miss Mary Smith.
