James Williams Scott who was born in North Carolina came to Texas with his father's family in 1831. He served the Texan forces during the Revolution, served as a supervisor of the surveyor's office in Milam and Burleson counties, and finally died in Hill County October 30,1877.

In 1839, he volunteered as a Texas Ranger in Milam County. James W Scott also served as the minister at Scott's Chapel at one time.
