Ernest was the second of four children. In 1923, he married Celia Gulshefski, and the couple raised three daughters: Lucille, Anna, and Alice. They had two other daughters, Mary and Marie, who died as infants. For more than forty years, he worked as a laborer for the Blue Coal Corporation in Wanamie, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.
