Roland was the youngest of four children. He worked in the mining industry for more than 40 years. In his early years, he worked as a nipper, then later was employed by the Wanamie Colliery of the Blue Coal Company as a foot tender. He married Cecelia Jean Rosinski at Wanamie on October 2, 1943, and the ceremony was performed by Rev. Jessie H. Dickerson. The couple raised two children: Maryann and Roland Jr. He was an avid gardener, and had been active for many years in the maintenance of the Newport Center Cemetery.
