Sarah Whitmer was born Sep 15, 1791 in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania and died Mar 14 (tombstone) or 18 (court records), 1874 in Muscatine County, Iowa. According to a notebook written by her son-in-law Wesley Kenerly Helm (1822-1871), "Sarah Whitmer was born Sep 23 on the Suscohanna River Pennsyliana. Died March 11th 1874 aged 82 years 7 mo 8 days." However, his math doesn't compute.

She married Leonard Houtz on Mar 26, 1811 in Perry County, Ohio. He was the son of Jacob Houtz and Anna Maria Gunckel. He was born Jan 1, 1874 in Berks County, Pennsylvania, and died Jan 8, 1864 in Muscatine County, Iowa at the age of 80.

The 1870 census for Seventy-Six Township, Muscatine County, Iowa (Roll 413, page 2) lists Sarah Houts, 79, keeping house, value of real estate 4000, value of personal estate 100, born in Penn.

On Sep 28, 1866, Sarah was appointed as "Administratix of the estate of Leonard Houtz deceased late of said County." (Muscatine County, Iowa court records)

On Mar 19, 1874, the following Administrator's Bond was filed in the Muscatine County, Iowa court:

"Know all Men by these Presents, That Alfred b. Wiles as principal, and as sureties, all of the County of Muscatine, in the State of Iowa, are held and firmly bound unto the County aforesaid, for the use of all persons herein concerned, in the penal sum of Eight Hundred Dollars, for the payment of which, well and truly to be made, we do jointly and severally bind ourselves and our lawful representatives. Witness our hands this _th day of March A. D. 1874.

"The Condition of the above Obligation is such, That, whereas, the above named Alfred B. Wiles has been appointed by the Circuit Court of said County, sitting as a Court of Probate, Administrator of the estate of Sarah Houtz, deceased, late of said County, who died intestate on 18th day of March A. D. 1874, to administer all and singular goods and chattels, moneys, rights, and credits according to law. . ."

She was buried in the Vanatta (Houtz) Cemetery in Muscatine County, Iowa. Her tombstone inscription is on the reverse side of her husband's tombstone, and reads: "Sarah, wife of L. Houtz. Died Mar 14, 1874. Aged 82 Ys, 5 Ms, 29 D." The cemetery is located in a farmer's field 5.3 miles east of Iowa Route 70 on Highway 22, then two miles south, and 1.2 miles west on the north side of the road. Alternate directions (2001): 6.0 miles west of the Muscatine 61 bypass on County Road G28 (also known as 231st St.). There are two signs on the 61 bypass-- larger sign showing Hershey street which goes east towards Muscatine and a small blue and yellow sign showing G28 which goes west towards Conesville, IA. Go west at this intersection towards Conesville for 6 miles. The cemetery will be on the right. Another set of directions: Travel west of Muscatine on Highway 22, turn left on High Prairie Road and go about two miles south, turn right, go past Jasper Avenue and past the house on the right. No church is standing nearby.
