Sally was the daughter of Peter Witmer and Mary Magdalena Overmyer. She was born Sep 15, 1791 and died Mar 14, 1874 at the age of 82.

There are two company muster roll and company pay roll records for him in this file. The first one shows him as a Segt, Lieutenant John Humberger's Company, dated Fairfield, from Jul 31, 1813 to Aug 14, 1813, with pay at 11 dollars per month, for a total of 5 dollars and 32 cents. He was "attached to Capt. Liday's Co. 14 Aug 1813." The second record shows him as a Pvt, Capt. Daniel Lidey's Company, Aug 14, 1813 to Sep 6, 1813. He had "Joined from Lieut. Humbergers Aug 14th at Upper Sandusky" at 8 dollars per month, for a total of 7 dollars and 48 cents. This included, "7 days pay included for travelling home - cald at 15 miles per day."
On Sep 21, 1810, Jacob was granted a patent by Congress for 160 acres in Reading Township, Fairfield County, Ohio.
On Jun 13, 1817, Jacob transferred by deed this land to Leonard. The transaction is recorded in the Fairfield County Recorders Office, Deed Book L, page 492:
"Know all men by these presents, That Jacob Houtz of the County of Fairfield and State of Ohio: for and in consideration of the sum of three hundred dollars lawful money of the United States to him paid in hand before the unsealing of these presents by Leonard Houtz of the County and State aforesaid; the receipt of which he does here-by acknowledge and is therewith contented and satisifed; have given, granted, bargained , sold, aliened, conveyed and confirmed, and by these presents do freely and absolutely give, grant, bargain, sell, alien, convey and confirm unto him the said Leonard Houtz his heirs and assigns, all the following piece, parcel or tract of land being the South East quarter of said thirteenth section in Township seventeen in Range seventeen containing one hundred and sixty acres more or less, it being the same quarter which was granted by Congress to the aforesaid Jacob Houtz by Patent dated the 21st of September, A. In the fall of 1850, the family moved to Seventy-Six Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, south of the town of Atalissa. They made the trip in a covered wagon and crossed the Mississippi River on a raft.
After the death of their daughters Lydia and Francis, Leonard and Sarah took two of their granddaughters into their home, Sarah Sergeant and Charlotte George.

Listed with him was Sarah Houtz, 65, female, white, married, 6 years in the state, born in Pennsylvania, and [their two grandchildren] Sara Sargent, 16, female, white, 2 years in the state, born in Ohio, and Charlotte George, 7, female, white, 6 years in the state, also born in Ohio.
The 1860 federal census for Iowa, Muscatine County, Seventy-Six Township (Roll 337, page 28 in pen) lists the Leonard Houts family as Leonard, 76, farmer, born in Pennsylvania; Sarah Sergeant, 20, born in Ohio; Lacelott George, 11, born in Ohio; and Sally Houts, 67, born in Ohio. (She was actually born in Pennsylvania.) Value of their real estate was 3000, value of personal estate was 200.
On Sep 28, 1866, the following Administrator's Bond was filed in the Muscatine County, Iowa court: "Estate of Leonard Houtz, Deceased.
"Know all Men by these Presents: That Sarah Houtz, Peter Houtz as principal and as sureties, all of the County of Muscatine in the State of Iowa, are held and firmly bound unto the County aforesaid, for the use of all persons herein concerned in the penal sum of Five Hundred Dollars, for the payment of which, well and truly to be made, we do jointly and severally bind ourselves, and our lawful representatives. Witness our hands this 28th day of Sept. A. D. 1866.
"The condition of the above obligation is such, That whereas, the above named Sarah Houtz was on this day appointed by the County Court of said County, sittting (sic) as a Court of Probate, Administratix of the estate of Leonard Houtz deceased late of said County, who died intestate on or about the 8th day of Jany 1864, to administer all and singular his goods and chattels, moneys, rights and credits according to law . . ."
Leonard Houtz was buried in the Vanatta (Houtz) Cemetery west of Muscatine, Iowa. The cemetery is located in a farmer's field 5.3 miles east of Iowa Route 70 on Highway 22, then two miles south and 1.2 miles west, on the north side of the road. Alternate directions (2001): 6.0 miles west of the Muscatine 61 bypass on County Road G28 (also known as 231st St.). There are two signs on the 61 bypass-- larger sign showing Hershey street which goes east towards Muscatine and a small blue and yellow sign showing G28 which goes west towards Conesville, IA. Go west at this intersection towards Conesville for 6 miles. The cemetery will be on the right. Another set of directions: Travel west of Muscatine on Highway 22, turn left on High Prairie Road and go about two miles south, turn right, go past Jasper Avenue and past the house on the right. The inscription on the tombstone reads: "Leonard Houtz Died Jan 8, 1864 Aged 80 Ys 8 Ds." Sarah's inscription is on the back of the tombstone.

The first one shows him as a Segt, Lieutenant John Humberger's Company, dated Fairfield, from Jul 31, 1813 to Aug 14, 1813, with pay at 11 dollars per month, for a total of 5 dollars and 32 cents. He was "attached to Capt. Liday's Co. 14 Aug 1813." The second record shows him as a Pvt, Capt. Daniel Lidey's Company, Aug 14, 1813 to Sep 6, 1813. He had "Joined from Lieut. Humbergers Aug 14th at Upper Sandusky" at 8 dollars per month, for a total of 7 dollars and 48 cents. This included, "7 days pay included for travelling home - cald at 15 miles per day."
On Sep 21, 1810, Jacob was granted a patent by Congress for 160 acres in Reading Township, Fairfield County, Ohio.
On Jun 13, 1817, Jacob transferred by deed this land to Leonard. The transaction is recorded in the Fairfield County Recorders Office, Deed Book L, page 492:
"Know all men by these presents, That Jacob Houtz of the County of Fairfield and State of Ohio: for and in consideration of the sum of three hundred dollars lawful money of the United States to him paid in hand before the unsealing of these presents by Leonard Houtz of the County and State aforesaid; the receipt of which he does here-by acknowledge and is therewith contented and satisifed; have given, granted, bargained , sold, aliened, conveyed and confirmed, and by these presents do freely and absolutely give, grant, bargain, sell, alien, convey and confirm unto him the said Leonard Houtz his heirs and assigns, all the following piece, parcel or tract of land being the South East quarter of said thirteenth section in Township seventeen in Range seventeen containing one hundred and sixty acres more or less, it being the same quarter which was granted by Congress to the aforesaid Jacob Houtz by Patent dated the 21st of September, A. D. 1810.
"To have and to hold the above granted and bargained premises and all the priviledges, dowers and appurtenances and commodi-ties to the same belonging or in anywise appertaining to him the said Leonard Houtz for himself his heirs, executors and administrators, does hereby covenant to and with the said Leonard Houtz, his heirs and assigns forever that he is lawfully seized in fee of the above granted and bargained premises and appurtenances; That they are free from all incumbrances; and that he and they will warrant and defend the same to him and them forever, against the lawfull claims of all persons.

In the fall of 1850, the family moved to Seventy-Six Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, south of the town of Atalissa. They made the trip in a covered wagon and crossed the Mississippi River on a raft.
After the death of their daughters Lydia and Francis, Leonard and Sarah took two of their granddaughters into their home, Sarah Sergeant and Charlotte George.
The 1852 state census for Iowa, Muscatine County, Seventy-Six Township (Roll IA_120, page 37, line 38), lists the Leonard Houtz household as having 5 males and 2 males for a total of 7 individuals. Among the males, there are 4 voters and 4 in the militia.
The 1854 state census for Iowa, Muscatine County, Seventy Six Township (Roll IA_122, page 49, line 23) lists the Leonard Houtz family immediately under the Wesley K. Helm family. [Charlotte Houtz married Wesley Kenerly Helm.] The household consisted of 3 males and 6 females for a total of 9 individuals. Among the males were 2 voters and 1 in the militia.
The 1856 state census for Iowa, Muscatine County, Seventy-Six Township (Roll IA_63, pages 831-832, line36) lists Leonard Houtz, 72, male, white, married, 6 years in the state, born in Pennsylvania, farmer, voter, and owning land. Listed with him was Sarah Houtz, 65, female, white, married, 6 years in the state, born in Pennsylvania, and [their two grandchildren] Sara Sargent, 16, female, white, 2 years in the state, born in Ohio, and Charlotte George, 7, female, white, 6 years in the state, also born in Ohio.
The 1860 federal census for Iowa, Muscatine County, Seventy-Six Township (Roll 337, page 28 in pen) lists the Leonard Houts family as Leonard, 76, farmer, born in Pennsylvania; Sarah Sergeant, 20, born in Ohio; Lacelott George, 11, born in Ohio; and Sally Houts, 67, born in Ohio. (She was actually born in Pennsylvania.) Value of their real estate was 3000, value of personal estate was 200.
On Sep 28, 1866, the following Administrator's Bond was filed in the Muscatine County, Iowa court: "Estate of Leonard Houtz, Deceased.
"Know all Men by these Presents: That Sarah Houtz, Peter Houtz as principal and as sureties, all of the County of Muscatine in the State of Iowa, are held and firmly bound unto the County aforesaid, for the use of all persons herein concerned in the penal sum of Five Hundred Dollars, for the payment of which, well and truly to be made, we do jointly and severally bind ourselves, and our lawful representatives. Witness our hands this 28th day of Sept. A. D. 1866.
"The condition of the above obligation is such, That whereas, the above named Sarah Houtz was on this day appointed by the County Court of said County, sittting (sic) as a Court of Probate, Administratix of the estate of Leonard Houtz deceased late of said County, who died intestate on or about the 8th day of Jany 1864, to administer all and singular his goods and chattels, moneys, rights and credits according to law . . ."
Leonard Houtz was buried in the Vanatta (Houtz) Cemetery west of Muscatine, Iowa. The cemetery is located in a farmer's field 5.3 miles east of Iowa Route 70 on Highway 22, then two miles south and 1.2 miles west, on the north side of the road. Alternate directions (2001): 6.0 miles west of the Muscatine 61 bypass on County Road G28 (also known as 231st St.). There are two signs on the 61 bypass-- larger sign showing Hershey street which goes east towards Muscatine and a small blue and yellow sign showing G28 which goes west towards Conesville, IA. Go west at this intersection towards Conesville for 6 miles. The cemetery will be on the right. Another set of directions: Travel west of Muscatine on Highway 22, turn left on High Prairie Road and go about two miles south, turn right, go past Jasper Avenue and past the house on the right. The inscription on the tombstone reads: "Leonard Houtz Died Jan 8, 1864 Aged 80 Ys 8 Ds." Sarah's inscription is on the back of the tombstone.

He married Sarah (Sally) Whitmer on Mar 26, 1811 in Fairfield County, Ohio. Probate Marriage Book A, Part B, page 23, records, "1811, March 23, Received the marriage of Leonard Houtz & Sally Whitmore," and is on file with the Court of Common Pleas, Fairfield County Probate Division, Lancaster, Ohio. Sally was the daughter of Peter Witmer and Mary Magdalena Overmyer. She was born Sep 15, 1791 and died Mar 14, 1874 at the age of 82.
Leonard Houtz grew up in his parental home near Hamlin, Berks County, Pennsylvania, and attended school in the community whenever he was not needed for farm work.
Leonard was in the War of 1812. He was a private and sergeant in the First Regiment (Williamson's), Ohio Militia. His papers are on file with the National Archives and Records Administration, under file RG No. 94, Stack Area IEL, Row 21, Compartment 13, Shelf B, Outcard No. 46253.
