Wesley Kenerly Helm was born Feb 27, 1822 in Blacksburg, Montgomery County, Virginia, and died Oct 30, 1871 in Muscatine, Muscatine County, Iowa of typhoid at the age of 49.

He married Charlotte Houtz on Oct 21, 1851 in Muscatine County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Leonard Houtz and Sarah Whitmer. She was born Jul 31, 1834 and died Jul 8, 1906 at the age of 71.

The 1852 Iowa state census for Muscatine County, Cedar Township lists Wesley Helm household as containing one male and one female, for a total of two. The household contained one voter and one militia member. (Roll IA_120, line 4)

The 1854 Iowa state census for Muscatine County, Seventy Six Township, lists Wesley K. Helm as the head of a family containing three males and four females, for a total of seven. Since they had only one living daughter at the time (Sarah Catherine, b. 1853), the identities of the others are unknown. The household contained one voter and one militia member. This household was listed immediately above the household of Leonard Houtz (Charlotte's father). (Roll IA_123, line 22)

The family was not enumerated in the 1856 Iowa State census for Seventy Six Township.

The 1860 federal census for Iowa, Muscatine County, Lake Township (Roll 337, page 690 or 54) lists the W. K. Helm family as follows: W. K. Helm, 37, born in Va; Charlotte, 26, born in Ohio; and the following four children born in Iowa: Sarah C., 7; Luella, 5; John L., 3; and Charles E., 1. Wesley was listed as a farmer, with real estate valued at 1500 and personal estate valued at 400.

The 1870 federal census for Iowa, Muscatine County, Lake Township (Roll 413, page 11 in ink or 148 typed) lists the Wesley Helms family as above, with all children born in Iowa: Wesley, 48; Charlotte, 35; Kate, 16; Louella, 15; Elizabeth, 10; Mary, 8; Georgia, 5; Wesley, 3; and Lilley, 1. Fred Hurd, 14, laborer, was living with them. Wesley was listed as a farmer, with value of personal estate at 1000.

On Nov 4, 1871, Charlotte filed the following petition in the Muscatine County Court:

"State of Iowa, Muscatine County

"To the Honorable Circuit court for Muscatine County Iowa

"The petition of the undersigned respectfuly showeth, that she is the widow of the late Wesley K. Helm, of this county, who died on the 30th day of October last past, and that her said Husband died without making a will.

"The undersigned therefore petitions your honorable Court, that she, the wife of the said deceased, shall be appointed administratrix to administer upon the estate of her said deceased husband.

"Muscatine County Iowa November 4, 1871 (signed) Charlotte Helm"

On Nov 11, 1871, the following Administrator's Bond was filed in the Muscatine County, Iowa court:

"Know all Men by these Presents, That Charlott Helm as principal, and Jacob H. (?) Barger, Geo Bake as sureties, all of the County of Muscatine, in the State of Iowa, are held and firmly bound unto the County aforesaid, for the use of all persons herein concerned, in the penal sum of One Thousand Dollars, for the payment of which, well and truly to be made, we do jointly and severally bind ourselves and our lawful representatives. Witness our hands this 4th day of November A. D. 1871.

"The condition of the above Obligation is such, That, whereas, the above named Charlott Helm has been appointed by the Circuit Court of said County, sitting as a Court of Probate, Administratrix of the estate of Wesley K. Helm, deceased, late of said County, who died intestate on or about the 30th day of October A. D. 1871, to administer all and singular the goods and chattels, moneys, rights and credits according to law. . ."

The inventory of his estate is shown in the photocopies following the photographs of his children.

The following document was filed in the Muscatine County, Iowa court on Nov 9, 1871:

"Allowance to Widos, &c.

"The undersigned, Appraisers of the Estate of Wesley K. Helm deceased, hereby allow, for the support of the widow, and six minor chilren under the age of fifteen years, of said decedent, for one year from his death, the sum of Five Hundred fifty Dollars.

"Witness our hands this 9th day of November 1871 (signed by three appraisers)."

Also on Nov 9, 1871, Charlotte filed the additional document:

"State of Iowa, Muscatine County -- SS:

"I Charlotte Helm being duly sworn, on oath do say that I have posted up five Notices, of which the annexed is a true copy, in five public places in Muscatine County, State of Iowa on the 9th day of November A. D. 1871. (signed) Charlotte Helm

"Sworn and subscribed to by the said Charlotte Helm before me and in my presence this 25th day of November A. D. 1871. Samuel McNutt, Notary Public"

The following public notice was attached:

"Notice of Administration

"Notice is hereby given that letters of Administration on the estate of Wesley K. Helm late of Muscatine County, State of Iowa, deceased, were on the 4 day of November A. D. 1871, duly granted to the undersigned by the Circuit Court of said County.

"All persons indebted to said estate are requested to make immediate payment to the undersigned at (blank)

"All persons holding claims against said estate are requested to file them in the office of the Clerk of said Court."

The children of Wesley Kenerly Helm and Charlotte Houtz were all born in a log cabin on the banks of the Cedar River, Muscatine County, Iowa, and were:
