Interment will follow at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery all under the direction of Emken-Linton Funeral Home.

TEXAS CITY - Helen McCraw Hamon Hemphill passed away on April 19, 2004. She was born August 4, 1913, in Elgin, Oklahoma, and grew up in Kingsville, Texas. She attended Henrietta M. King High School, Texas A & I University, and did her nurses training at St. Joseph Hospital in Houston. She returned to Corpus Christi, Texas, to work at Spohn Hospital and in the Corpus Christi School District as a school nurse. There she married Gene Hamon in January of 1939. She and Gene moved to San Antonio in 1955, and Texas City in 1957. She was active in the community schools, volunteered at Mainland Center Hospital, was a charter member of St. John?s United Methodist Church, and a Rotary Ann until the death of Gene in 1974. In 1976, she married long time friend, Austin Hemphill, and lived in San Antonio until 1993, when she moved back to Texas City. She took great pride in being known as "Chairman of the Board" of Gene Hamon Ford, Inc.

She is survived by three sons, their wives, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Tomy and Sue Hamon of Texas City, Texas; Gene, Rene, Austin, Hilton and Parker Hamon of Palestine, Texas; Kari Hamon of New York City, New York; Kelley Hamon of Austin, Texas, Trayce Hall of Houston, Texas, Shayne Hall of Santa Fe, Texas; Toby and Sallie Hamon of Texas City, Texas; Jarred, Kristen, and Sidney Whittington of Dickinson, Texas; Tracie Hamon of Webster, Texas; Jerry, Susan, James and Ryan Hamon of Friendswood, Texas; two step-daughters, Jeanine Payne of San Antonio, Texas, and Kathleen Bradley of Houston, Texas; nephew, John R. McCraw of Hilltop Lakes, Texas.

The family would like to express special appreciation to Helen?s devoted caregivers and friends: Beatrice Pritchett, Diane Jones, Sandtina Nelson, Nancy Bolen, and Florence Samuel.

Pallbearers will be James Hamon, Ryan Hamon, Wayne Clement, Michael Griffin, Doug Chilton and Shayne Hall. Honorary pallbearers will be John R. McCraw, Cam Stiernberg, Herb Zenthoefer and Ted Weatherall.

Visitation will be held 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, 2004, at Emken Linton Funeral Home, 5100 Emmett Lowry Expressway, Texas City, Texas. A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Thursday, April 22, 2004, at St. John?s United Methodist Church, 1432 16th Avenue N., Texas City, Texas. Interment will follow at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. John?s United Methodist Church, 1432 16th Avenue N., Texas City, Texas 77590.
