Walter was the last child of 10 for Elizabeth Bugbee and Nehemiah Lyon. His 9 siblings are: Samuel K., Mehitable, Walter (who lived less than 5 months), Baxter, Betty, Lucretia, Nehemiah May and Benjamin. He moved with his family from Sturbridge to Craftsbury, Vermont. He married Mary Jenness on Dec. 3, 1814 in Craftsbury. His occupation and residence are listed in the census for 1820, 1820, 1840 as being in Agriculture in Craftsbury. They had 5 children: Silas, Mary, Eliza, Huntington and Nathan Jenness. Walter and his wife moved to Lyndon, Illinois where they both died. Walter's brother's (Nehemiah May Lyon) son Marcus is also buried in Lyon Cemetery.

He had one 1/2 brother, Samuel Rinsley Lyon from his father's second wife, Hannah Snell.
