Mr.Geo.Brodbeck died on Sunday afternoon quite suddenly of apoplexy. He was buried yesterday afternoon. His sons will continue the business.
George Brodbeck came from Germany to the United States in 1828. He first settled in Somerset County, Pennsylvania before moving west to Millersburg, Holmes County, Ohio. He met his future wife, Eliza Uhl here and they married in 1842. He did return to Germany to visit family and purchase goods to start a tailoring business in his new home. His brother Jacob, who accompanied him to the US, settled in Wayne County, Ohio, where he farmed until his death in 1889. George and Eliza moved further west settling at Rome, Illinois, north of Peoria. They opened a general store in the river town. A fire consumed their business in October of 1868 and the family decided a move was necessary again, so they headed northeast to the town of Marseilles, Illinois. The Brodbeck Dry Goods and Notions store was located on the east side of Main Street. The family lived above the store on the second level. George and Eliza had nine children, all born at Rome, Illinois.
