Elizabeth Clara Bender, the eighth oldest of the eleven Children born to William Bender and Margaret German, was born near Petersburg, Nebraska, on August 5, 1917. In 1920, the family moved to Cornlea, Nebraska, and in 1930 they moved to Newman Grove, Nebraska, where the lived for eight years, then in 1938, they moved back to Cornlea. She received her education in Sacred Heart Parish School and Newman Grove Public School. Later, she did housework in Omaha.

She was united in Marriage to Henry Frank Deitering on June 10, 1941, in Sacred Heart Church, Cornlea, Nebraska. He was born on July 20, 1917, at Elgin, Nebraska, the son of Barney Deitering and Caroline Luetner, the former born at Ottoville, Ohio, and the latter in Minnesota. He received his education in St. Boniface School, Elgin, Nebraska. He served in the U.S. Army for three years during World War II.
