John Womer Wert was born in what is known as Potato Valley, Snyder Country, Pennsylvania. John helped his father clear the land on their farm. He often told of the great blazing fires set to consume the giant oak trees and other timber felled to create open fields for the crops. As a young man John learned the carpenter trade and was one of those emplyed to build the Thompson Mill at Thompsontown. John "stole" Lydia Sausman from a man courting her. John had a fight with the man and eventually married Lydia. John, born a Lutheran, converted to the Mennonite faith of his wife after a conversion experience while working in the field. He had had a disagreement with his borther, but after his conversion he settled the dispute. He eventually became a deacon in the Mennonite Church. John bought his father-in-law's farm.
