Henry had an 8th grade school house education. He grew up on a farm and learned the art of butchering hogs. He would go from farm to farm hiring himself out to butcher animals. Henry's farm had poor soil which made his farming difficult unable to support many cows. Henry never owned an automobile, instead relying on the trusted horse and buggy. He was raised a Mennonite, eventually becoming a deacon at Deleware Mennonite Church November 15, 1927.
