SARAH JANE HELVIE

Sarah Jane, wife of William K. Helvie, was born Aug. 24th, 1823, and departed this life, May 31, 1889, aged 65 years, 9 months and 7 days.
Deceased was united in marriage with W. K. Helvie, Dec. 31st, 1846. To them were born seven children, four daughters and three sons, six of whom are yet living, who mourn her loss. The loss of mother is almost unbearable. The husband and children will day by day see emblems and mottos of mother in every room. In every part of the house are the indelible marks of the loved one. In the dead hours of the night, how often have they heard her sweet and soothing voice. How often in sickness has this dear mother, with her gentle hand, cooled the fevered brow, and moistened the parched lips, and with careful eye, watched every turn of the dreaded disease and labored so incessantly to bring her loved ones back to life and health. Such a wife and mother was Sister Helvie.
She was an early christian. In early childhood she learned to love the Savior. That kind and gentle christian spirit she carried throughout life. Her christian light has shone continually before her family, and when sorely tempted, she has always stood firm. When darkness beclouded her christian sky, she moved quietly and calmly by faith, the christian banner still unfurled, waving encouragement to her friends, neighbors and family.
When a sister or brother in Christ had erred she was always ready to lend a helping hand to bring them back again, thus setting forth the great principle of christianity.
The chief and highest motive of her life was to assist and help elevate fallen humanity. In this we know her husband and children can ever remember, while life shall last, that she has done her part.
She was also like Paul, when he came to die, she did with him exclaim, I have fought a good fight, I have kept the faith, I am ready to be offered up. There was a crown of righteousness surely hers.
Though her body now rests in the grave, yet there is only a very thin veil that intervenes between the dear ones on earth's shore and the sun bright clime. One little touch of God and that veil is rent in twain and mother's voice will again be heard as natural as though there had never been a separation. So, mourning ones, let this be your consoling thought as mother has followed Jesus. I will do the same, and when the veil of death is past, when lodged above the stormy blast, then you can sing the triumphant song, O, wondrous bliss, O, joy sublime. I'll have Jesus and mother with me all the time.
