Jordan Barnett Lively was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He was the third of 10 children born to Anderson Lively and Mary Elizabeth Bryant Lively. By 1854 the family had moved to Izard County, Arkansas. Anderson was deceased prior to 1860 and the 1860 census in Izard County lists Mary Elizabeth as the head of household. Jordan and his older brother (Carter) enlisted in the Confederate Army. On February 28, 1863 Jordan is listed as "sick at home". Carter died in the Civil War but Jordan eventually left Arkansas and brought his mother, brothers and sisters to Milam County where they are all found in the 1870 census.

Jordan Barnett Lively (1840-1897) and Lee Knight Lively (1852-1902) were married August 24, 1875 in Milam County, Texas. They had 8 children, of which only 3 boys lived to adulthood (Tollison, Walter, and Charlie). Jordan and Lee are buried in Locklin Cemetery in San Gabriel, Texas in a cement enclosure with a marker that states "Jordan and Lee and 6 family members". (5 of these are the 5 children who died in early childhood and one unknown). Richardson Lively (Jordan's brother) was buried nearby but his marker was partially broken and moved into the cement enclosure to preserve it.

Jordan's siblings were Carter Lively, Martha Ellender Lively Clark, Eliza Lively Clark, Barbara Ann Lively Howerton, Richardson C. Lively, Arrelia Lively Barclay, Rosannah Lively Moore, Sarah Lively Bryant, and Reuben Bryant Lively. Martha, Eliza, Arrelia, and Richardson are buried in the Locklin Cemetery
