Moses was born in New Hampshire in 1788 and moved with his parents at the age of four to Litchfield, Herkimer County, New York; afterwards they moved to Northumberland. He married in 1822 to Hannah Rice and moved to Horicon, Warren County, New York. He was in the lumber and flour business and relocated in 1864 to Waubeek, Linn Co, Iowa, where he was a farmer. He and his wife had four children. His granddaughter Agnes Stickney noted that "northwest of her parent's home (three or four miles) was the home of my father's parents. They were industrious, frugal, forehanded people who appreciated the value of money."
At the age of 89, he signed his name in his great granddaughter's autograph book. The entry included "Jordans Grove Dec 23, 1877 born in Jaffrey, N.H. Feby 23, 1788."
He died at the age of 93 years of age on 20 November 1881 in Waubeek, Iowa. He is buried with a GAR marker for his service in the War of 1812 in the Jordan's Grove Cemetery; however, his side of the marker with Hannah is almost unreadable.
