Emmanual Mortimer, widely known in Labette county as "Governor" Mortimer, died at his home at Mortimer, the little town he founded, fifteen miles west of Parsons, on the Frisco railroad, on Monday May 11, 1903, the 87th year of his age. About a week ago he was thrown from a buggy and sustained a fracture of one leg. This together with his great age, caused his death. He was a man of great vitality and remarkably active for one of years. About twelve years ago he sustained a loss of one arm by it being caught in a threshing machine. "Governor" Mortimer was born July 27, 1817 in Kentucky and came to Kansas about 1868, settling first near Thayer. He was admitted to the bar in Kentucky and practiced law there before coming to Kansas, but abandoned the practice of law after coming here. The deceased was a conspicuous character, having at times taken an active part in important matters as well as politics. The funeral services took place Tuesday from the United Brethren Church at Mortimer and interment was made in Harmony Grove Cemetery. (Oswego Independent 15 May 1903)

Emanuel Mortimer, one of the earliest residents of Labette county, died at his home in Mortimer, 15 miles west of Parsons last Monday. The deceased was 87 years of age and was widely known in Labette County and was always spoken of as "Governor" Mortimer. Many years ago he laid out the little town of Mortimer, platting a portion of his farm into town lots. The town current boasts dozens of residents, two churches, a general store, post office, grain elevator, and railroad depot. The deceased was born in Kentucky in 1817 and practiced law there before coming to Kansas. He came to Kansas in 1868 and settled near Thayer, but soon moved to Labette County. About twelve years ago the left arm of the "Governor" was caught in a thrashing machine and as a result of the injuries it had to be amputated at the shoulder. Notwithstanding his advanced age at the time, he showed great vitality in recovering from the shock and seemed good for many years of life. One day about two weeks ago he was thrown from a buggy and one leg was broken and this, in connection with other injuries and his advanced age caused his death. The funeral services were held at the United Brethren church in Mortimer and were attended by a large number of friends of the deceased. (Parsons Sun 21 May 1903)
