James Thomas "Tom" Burkett was the 2nd son of Mathew Bosker Burkett and Carrie Louisa Williamson. Before he was ten years old his family moved to Orlando.

He married Beulah Estelle Stephens on 1 Feb 1920 and they had four children before divorcing. Son, James Ernest Burkett (1920-1979), buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Orange County; daughter, Anita Louise Burkett Farnell Waters (1922-1993), buried in Fitzgerald Cemetery, Polk County; daughter, Margaret Marie Burkett Powell (1924-2010), buried in Greenwood Cemetery; and son, Charles Haskell Burkett (1926-1945), also buried in Greenwood Cemetery.

James Thomas remarried in 1934 to Ollie Lou Byrd (1918-1999) and had two more daughters, Carrie Alidel Burkett Malloy and MaryJean Burkett Shine, before divorcing in 1939.
"Tom" is buried in Conway Cemetery close to his parents and grandparents, Eli Warren Burkett and Maranda Kathleen Jones Burkett. His sisters, Louella Reatha Burkett Middlebrooks and Odessa Maranda Burkett Motes are also buried in Conway Cemetery. His brothers George and Jesse Burkett are at rest in Glen Haven Memorial Park, Winter Park, Orange County; and his sister, Effie Margaret Burkett Gillespie is interred at Daytona Memorial Park in Volusia County, FL.
