DUANE: Joseph P. Duane, 95, of the Ashley House died Saturday, March 8, 2003 at his nephew's home in Charleston, SC. Born August 11, 1907 in Charleston, SC he was the oldest son of nine children of Joseph H. and Martha A. Duane (nee Murphy). He attended St. Joseph Parochial School, and Bishop England High School, Navy Hospital Corps School in Norfolk, VA and advanced classes in Medical Administration at US Navy Medical School in Bethesda, MD. He was married 50 years to Madonna Mary Rushworth of Boston. Mr. Duane enlisted as an apprentice seaman in the US Navy in February 1927. He was a career Navy man, and served 42 years on many ships and duty stations. At the advent of WWII he served on submarines and on the USS Saratoga, which saw action at Iwo Jima. He made several war patrols on submarines in the Pacific. One patrol included transporting marines, Col. Carlson's Raiders, into Makin Island as a diversion to the marine landing in Guadalcanal. Maj. Jimmy Roosevelt, son of Pres. Roosevelt, was executive officer of the Raiders and was aboard the Argonaut, Mr. Duane's submarine at that time. Upon retirement in 1969 from the USNTRC in San Diego, Mr. Duane held the rank of CMDR MSC USN. After his wife's death, he returned to Charleston in 1992. Mr. Duane was an accomplished pianist whose music touched many lives. His brother Walter V. Duane and sister Gertrude Duane Clark, both of Charleston; and 100 nieces and nephews, survive him. The family will receive friends Monday, March 10, 2003 at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, 150 Wentworth Street from 5-8PM with the Rosary recited at 7PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30AM Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 89 Hasell St., Charleston. Interment will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma, CA later in the week. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
