Born in Vermillion County, Indiana, in 1835 to David and Katherine (Stokes) Rush. Josephus married Frances M Cordell in Minnesota in 1863. She died in Decatur County, Iowa, in 1866. Josephus married Mary Jane Walden in Van Wert, Iowa, in 1867. Josephus and Mary Jane lived in Missouri and Kansas before returning to Iowa in 1891. Josephus and his first wife had one son. Josephus and Mary Jane had five sons and six daughters.
