JOHN BIRCK
After a long and painful sickness of cancer of the stomach, Mr. John Birck, a highly respected German-American citizen, died at twenty minutes past two o'clock this morning, at the home of his son, Philip Birck, Esq., in the old Meuser homestead on N. Walnut Street.
Mr. Birck was a native of the town of Beckingen, Germany, and came to Madison in 1854, being ever since a resident of Jefferson County, either here of at China*. He was the father of thirteen children, all of whom, with their venerable and now bereaved mother, are yet living. He was the brother of Mr. Peter Birck, the harness-maker, and was in the sixty-second year of his age.
Having lived an upright, Christian life, he has gone to his reward in the world on high, leaving a name and memory which his children and grand-children will always proudly cherish.
The funeral will take place on Friday morning from the St. Mary's Catholic Church, after which the remains will be conveyed to China for final interment.
