On the morning of January 28, he with Mrs. Baker came from Glendale to Simpson, Ill., to visit their daughter, Mrs. W. T. Bradley. About noon of that day, he was stricken with paralysis and remained in a terrible condition until Friday morning, February 6, 1931, when death came. Loved ones did all they could possibly be done for his recovery, but his Lord willed otherwise.
He was united in marriage to Mary Francis Jennings in December 1882. To this union were six children born, two having preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife and four children, Mrs. India Bradley of Simpson, Ill., Mrs. Carrie Aly and Mrs. Eva Austin of Golconda, Ill., Mrs. Eula Bruce of Mounds, Ill.; Two brothers, Tom Baker of Marion, Ill.; and George Baker of Carterville, Ill.; nine grandchildren, Wayne Lyman and Lloyd Austin, Marcia and Maxine Aly, LaFern Bradley, Frances Kerley, Johnnie and Jewel Bruce, also a host of other relatives and friends.
Mr. Baker was an honest industrious man, who was always attended to his own affairs. And was always ready to help in time of need. He was of a strong moral character. A kind and loving father. And a true loving husband.
He professed faith in Christ at the age of 35 years and united with the Elbethel Baptist church of Pope County later moving his membership to Mt. Zion where he remained a faithful member until death.
Funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. W. I Bradley on Feb. 7th at eleven o’clock conducted by Elder N. A. Rodgers, a very close friend to the family. After which the body was taken to Mt. Zion and funeral services conducted there by Elder Lee Handcock of whose preaching he was converted under and later baptized by some 32 years ago. A large crowd of sorrowing friends attended the funeral. The floral offerings was very beautiful and profuse.
