DEATH OF MR. CRAWFORD
Another vacancy in the ranks of Meade Post of the G.A.R. was made in the passing of Mr. John Crawford of Mountain View. Mr. Crawford has been a sufferer from asthma for several years and succombed to an unusual severe attack on Friday night, January first. The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon from Mountain View Church; pastors J.R. Landsborough of the Presbyterian Church, and W.T. Milliken of the Baptist Church jointly officiating. The body was laid to rest in the Mountain View Cemetery with honors of the Grand Army of the Republic, Meade Post having charge of the services at the grave.
Mr. Crawford was born in Coshocton, Ohio, on July 8th, 1832, thus he was in his eighty-third year at the time of his death. He moved to Iowa and in March of 1862 he enlisted in Co. H of the 16th Regular U.S. Volunteer Infantry. He was disabled and received honorable discharge in November of the same year, but re-entisted as soon as he was strong enough to go to the front again--this time in Company K. of the First Iowa Volunteer Cavalry--and remained in continuous service from that time until he was mustered out in Texas at the time of the close of the war in February 1866. He took part in all the battles of the Campaign, and saw service in Tennessee and Texas.
His first wife was Mary Jane Smith, who died August 15, 1877. Eight children blessed this union, of whom seven are living; Graham H. Crawford, Mrs. Mary L. Gregg and Mrs. Laura V. Cooper of Sioux City, Iowa, Mrs. Margaret M. Rose of Waukon, Iowa; Herbert T. of Clarkia, Idaho; William C. of Oregon City, and Walter R. of Cherokee, Iowa.
He married again in 1880, his bride being the lady who survives him. There were three children from this second marriage, of whom two, Mrs. Bessie P. Alldredge and Paul Clifford, both of Oregon City, are living. Mr. Crawford leaves a widow, nine children, seventeen grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren to mourn the loss of a kind husband and father. Mr. Crawford was a good man, a loyal citizen, and a splendid neighbor, and made a host of friends in his little over eleven years' sojourn in Oregon.
Mrs. Crawford and family wish to extend their thanks to the host of friends who gave their aid and sympathy in this time of sorrow.
