Annie was born and grew up in Spencer County, KY, the second child of Tom Bennett Tichenor and Perlina Shelburne. Her middle name was a tribute to the doctor who delivered her. She married Sam Maratta(y), who was also her 3rd cousin, in 1901. The couple felt that his health might improve out west and so moved out to New Mexico to take the 'prairie cure'. While in New Mexico, they had two daughters, Dottie and Mary Frances. Eventually, they moved out to California, but then decided to return back to Kentucky when the west coast did not suit their daughters.

Annie enjoyed business and took on various real estate ventures, buying and selling several pieces of real estate in California, and then later in Kentucky. She eventually managed two motels in Indiana. She enjoyed writing and several pieces of her poetry, in the form of letters to her daughters during significant times of their lives, still exist. She was also very proud of her natural bright red hair.

She died in Indiana due to old age.
