Alsace Lorraine is the Northern corner of France. The region is gentle and rolling with well-ordered vineyards, medieval church bowers and barley and wheat fields. Lying between the Rhine and the three thousand to four thousand foot peaks of the Vosges Mountains Alsace-Lorraine is cut off from the rest of France.

Napoleon III was married to a beautiful Spanish Catholic of noble birth whom the French loved and admired. She bared her shoulders in low necked crinoline gowns and what she wore was copied by every woman with any pretension to stylishness---her name, EUGENIE.

In January 1871 under their rule France fell to the Germans. The Peace of Frankfurt, signed May 10, 1871, imposed terms which to the French seemed grueling. Alsace and Lorraine, including Metz, were to be handed over to the Germans, a war indemnity of five billion frances was to be paid and a German army of occupation was to be maintained at French expense.

In the "lost" provinces the adult population, though they retained their homes, suffered the spiritual misery of displaced persons, watching their children learn an alien tongue and, with the adaptability of youth, grow up to be German rather than French. French textbooks were destroyed by the Germans. Eugenie's father hired a French tutor so the children would learn French but they attended German schools also. Alsace Lorraine was under German rule from 1871 to 1918.

Eugenie raised a big garden, knit socks for the family and was a wonderful cook according to Marie Lambert.

She died in Bremerton January 4, 1935, at the age of 73, in her own home where her daughter, Mrs. Walt Goehrs and family were also living and caring for her.
