Ellen 'Ella' Maria (pronounced Ma-rye-ya) Williams was born August 15, 1851 to Giles Bright Williams, Jr. (1808-1894) and wife Mary Ann 'Polly' Nichols (1812-1894) of Robeson County, NC. She was born at home in what would become the HISTORIC WILLIAMS-POWELL HOUSE, entered into the National Register of Historic Places on April 9, 1984. She was the eleventh of thirteen children to be born to Giles and Mary Ann.

At age 28, Ella married Bradley Flowers Yates, Jr. (1844-1899) of Columbus County, NC, on January 12, 1880, Sterling Mill Township, Robeson County, NC. They were married by J. W. Dickson, Baptist Minister. Bradley lost his right arm to a Union sharpshooter on July 1, 1863 at Gettysburg, PA, so when he married Ella, she truly became the "right hand" to Bradley. Farming was very difficult for him as a one-armed man; however, his older brother Luke helped build a home for them and also assisted with the farming.

Ella and Bradley had seven children from 1880-1893. Ella Maria died in childbirth with her last child, Ella Williams Yates, born 21 Dec 1893. The daughter, Ella, survived, but died 20 Jun 1900 at age 6 1/2 years old. Ella and Bradley are buried in Piney Forest Baptist Church Cemetery mid-way between Cerro Gordo & Chadbourn, Columbus County, NC.

Following Ella's death, Bradley's sister Mary Ann 'Aunt Mamie' (1839-1912), came to live with the family and help raise the children. Mary Ann never married and continued to raise the children after Bradley's death in 1899.
