MARY ANN 'Polly' NICHOLS was born Feb. 15, 1812 in Columbus County, NC, the daughter of AVERITT PEARCH NICHOLS SR (1767-1847) and wife MARY POLLY LEWIS (1767-1835).

At age 20 (1832) she married GILES BRIGHT WILLIAMS, JR of Robeson County, NC. This was about the same time GILES built their "transitional Federal-Greek-Revival domestic architecture" plantation home (1830-32) on the 1250 acres he owned. At the time of the death of GILES' father, GILES, SR (1844), he inherited another 250 acres, making him one of the largest plantation owners in Robeson County.

The home served as the childhood home of their thirteen children, twelve of whom lived to adulthood. The home remained in the possession of Williams descendants for about 150 years and is one of the oldest homes in Robeson County.

On April 9, 1984 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is known as THE WILLIAMS-POWELL HOUSE, located at 2298 Fair Bluff Road, Orrum, Robeson County, NC (west side SR 2256, approx. 1.0 mile south of junction with SR 2255 - Tobacco Road).

MARY ANN died on June 24, 1894 at age 82 yrs 4 mos & 9 dys as is inscribed on her headstone. She and husband GILES are buried in the OLD SPRING HILL CEMETERY about 1/4 mile from their Historic home.
