J. Beryl McCracken, 88, Limestone, TN, died Monday, December 1, 2008, at Durham Hensley Nursing Home.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 3, 2008, at 7:00 p.m. at Jeffers Funeral Chapel.

Graveside Service will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Oakland Cemetery. The Greene County Honor Guard will be in charge of service. Pastor Dr. David Harmon and Rev. Jimmy Phillips will officiate.

Survivors: Wife of 31 years, Joyce Luttrell Young McCracken, of the home. Other survivors are son Les and his wife, Glenda, and grandchildren, Christiana and John Joseph McCracken, of Orfordville, WI (formerly of Chuckey, TN); a brother, Theil and wife, Janice McCracken, of Elizabethton, TN; step-children, Karen Young, of Limestone, TN, Kris Young, of Johnson City, TN, Sandra Bloomer (Charles), of Piney Flats, TN; Step-grandchildren, Kevin and Keith Bloomer and Karla Stalley, Kerrie Mollins and Skylar Young, of Johnson City, TN; Four step-great grandchildren.

Mr. McCracken was preceded in death by: Parents; brother and sister-in law, Kyle and Arbutus, of Knoxville, TN; First wife of 31 years, Christine Purcell McCracken; and infant daughter, Jeffery Lynn McCracken.

Active pallbearers: Darrell Adams, Charles Bloomer, Keith Bloomer, Gregg McCracken, John Joseph McCracken, Caroll Rhea, Roger Rhea and Dean Tipton.

Honorary pal bearers: David Eidson, Harold Eidson, Eugene Harmon, Allen McCracken, Marvin Ogle, Homer Osborne and Pat Wolfe.

Mr. McCracken was a well-known local dairy farmer for over forty years. After retiring from farming he served as a bus driver for the Greene County School System.

Mr. McCracken will be remembered as a very loving and caring father, grandfather and great grandfather. He had attended both Chuckey and Clearsprings United Methodist Church. He was a man of strong Christian faith and values. He was always thankful to the Lord for his many blessings.

He was known for his fun-loving, happy nature and wonderful sense of humor. Beryl loved people and was very proud of the accomplishments of his children, grandchildren and friends.

He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army in Europe. He served in General Patton's 3rd Infantry Division. He was a combat wounded and decorated veteran of the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star in service to his country.

Soon after returning from WWII, he began a lifelong career of dairy farming in Greene County, TN.

Beryl loved farming and the land. He was a early pioneer of no-till farming and many other innovative practices. He was recognized for his efforts in soil conservation by being selected the Outstanding Conservation farmer of Greene County and 2nd in the state of TN.

He and his family also developed their Valspring Holsteins herd to one of national prominence thru the years. He served 12 years on East Tennessee Farm Credit Services Board of Directors.

After retiring from dairy farming he enjoyed driving a bus for the Greene County school system for 10 years. He loved the children and many of them thought of him as their special friend and guardian.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to Chuckey Elementary School, c/o Positive Behavior Support Program, Attention: Teresa Taylor, Principal, 1605 Chuckey Hwy., Chuckey, TN 37641; fund in memory of J. Beryl McCracken.

The family would like to extend a special thank you the staff of V.A. Medical Center of Johnson City; staff and friends of Durham Hensley Nursing Home; and the staff of Smokey Mountain Hospice.
