Joseph and Adaline married in April of 1843, in Crawford County, Ohio. They migrated south to Wayne County, Iowa around 1853, where they remained until around 1871. They then continued their move south to the Independence, Montgomery County, Kansas area. By June of 1880 they were in LaFayette Township, Chautauqua County, Kansas.
After Adaline's death in LaFayette, in July of 1880, Joseph moved to the Galena, Cherokee County, Kansas area. Several of his children were living there at the time. He died there in December of 1899 and was returned to Chautuaqua County to be buried next to Adaline.
