John Henry Tallman, 87, died on Friday (Nov. 28, 2008) at the Absolut Nursing Home in Westfield.
He was born Election Day, Nov. 4, 1921, the son of Henry William Tallman and Maude Pratt Tallman. A lifelong native of Mayville, he spent the majority of his working life building quality furniture at Kling Furniture and Crawford Furniture. Leaving the furniture business in the late '70s, he went to work at Renold Wireworks retiring in 1984.
He was proud of his woodworking abilities both before and after his retirement, he built a number of grandmother clocks as well as other quality pieces from a variety of hardwoods. In addition to enjoying working with his hands, he had an absolute passion for listening to music from the '30s and '40s. He could frequently be heard humming or whistling his favorite tunes as he circulated throughout the village of Mayville. He had many friends from the community and work.An avid outdoorsman until age caught up with him; he held a passion for both livebait fishing and rabbit hunting. On crisp fall mornings he could be found on a rabbits trail with his two favorite dogs, ''Bing'' and ''Joe'', in hot pursuit; then later spending that same evening and night on Chautauqua Lake seeking the difficult to catch Muskie. During the 1950s and '60s, he caught several Muskies of 30 pounds and more. One winter while perch fishing through the ice he caught and released a 52 1/2 inch muskellunge. John often said, ''I have been a very lucky man. I came along at just about the right time.''

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, a daughter, son, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Two sisters preceded John in death: Henrietta Maude and Alberta Ruth; half-sister Margaret Badgley; and three half-brothers: Mearl Badgley, Raymond Badgley and Leslie Badgley.
