MOORESVILLE - Lula "Jeanette" Starnes Atwell, 79, of Mooresville, passed away Friday, October 17, 2008. Service: 11 a.m. Monday, October 20, 2008, Prospect Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation: 5:30 p.m. - 7 p.m. Sunday October 19, 2008, at the funeral home.

Lula "Jeanette" Starnes Atwell, 79, of Mooresville, passed away on Friday, Oct. 17, 2008 at her residence. She was born on Jan. 26, 1929 in Mooresville, the daughter of the late Luther "Luke" and Lacie Rogers Starnes. A graduate of Mooresville High School and King’s Business College of Charlotte, she was retired from the Iredell Statesville Schools She was a member of Prospect Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher in the children’s department.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Hazel Benfield, Della Kennerly, Peg Julian; brothers, Marvin, George and Robert Starnes; and son-in-law, Rodney S. Thompson.
Mrs. Atwell is survived by her husband, Robert "Bob" Atwell Sr., whom she married 60 years ago on Oct. 16, 1948; children, Robert W. "Chip" Atwell Jr. and wife, Lynn, of Terrell, Patty A. Bell and husband, Mark, and Mac Ray Atwell, all of Mooresville, and Cynthia "Cindy" Thompson of Concord; sister, Polly Parker; grandchildren, Derrick Atwell and wife, Heidi, Kelly Atwell and wife, Aimee, Leif Atwell, Molly Deaton and husband, Brian, Patrick Bell, and Lauren Thompson; nine great-grandchildren; and special life-time friend, Mattie Christenberry.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 20 at Prospect Presbyterian Church with Rev. Joanne Hull and Rev. Delores Spillman officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625 or the Alzheimer’s Association, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215.
