He later married Gertrude "Trudy" (Ammons) Snook. They had no children together; however, Trudy had two living daughters (Kathleen and Phyllis) by a previous marriage. Dick and Trudy lived in Encampment, Wyoming at the time of his death. He owned and operated a restaurant in nearby Riverside along the banks of the North Platte River; and, he had previously owned and operated a restaurant in Grand Island, Nebraska. He died in a Laramie hospital following a heart attack while changing a tire on his car. Although Trudy's name appears on the Smith family headstone, she was not buried at this location.
