He was mustered in October 11, 1864 and appears on a Springfield, IL muster roll dated Oct 17 1864 as a 34 year old, 5 ft. 6 ½ in. tall farmer with blue eyes, light hair, and fair complexion.
He rendezvoused with his regiment on October 31, 1864 in Athens, Alabama. His regiment moved north by foot & by train, fording several streams and skirmishing with elements of General Hood's Army of the Tennessee much of the way. On November 30, the regiment participated in the Battle of Franklin and on December 15 fought in the Battle of Nashville under Brigade commander Colonel Sydney Post (formerly of the 59th). According to battle reports, the 59th was "in the first line of the assaulting column, and planted the first colors on the enemy's works."
Ambrose was not wounded, so far as I can determine. He did go into the Army hospital at Columbia, TN on December 24, 1864 and died of chronic diarrhea in Army Hospital #2 at Nashville, TN on January 31, 1865. His wife picked up his personal effects on May 11, 1865.
