Mary was the oldest surviving child of Henry Ahlers & Anna Luebbert, both german immigrants. Her siblings are Herman(died as a child), Henry, Joseph, and Anna(Burg). Mary was born in St. Louis, MO but lived most of her childhood in Breese, IL, about 40 miles from St. Louis. Mary's dad died at the age of 40. Her mother married Ben Munchrath five years later and moved Mary & her sister to Iowa. She married Fred Gross on Jan 26, 1904 in Earling, Iowa. Mary and Fred had 8 children, Odelia(Watkins), Frank, Victor, Johanna(French), Freda(Ward), Reno, Clare & Harold.
