Charles was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Grand Canyon. He was a farmer and employee of Heins-Alltel Telephone Company. He retired from the telephone company in 1992 after 39 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Peggy Baker Coffer; one son, Charles Ray "Chuck" Coffer of Sanford; three daughters, Charlene Gaster and husband Mike of Lemon Springs, Gail Coffer of Charlotte, and Lynne Holt and husband Johnny of Sanford. He leaves six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters, Nathalene Lankford, Christine Porter, and Glenda Snider. Bridges Cameron Funeral Home. The service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008, at Center Church United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bob Morrison and the Rev. Mary Lou McElray officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
