Gay Hanks is the son of Seth Columbus and Susan Francis 'Bradshaw' Hanks. He married Lelia Ann Dugan Whittington on May 10, 1914 in Decatur, Macon Co., IL. They adoped twin sons: John LeRoy Hanks and William Earl Hanks.

Was Fifth Cousin to Lincoln; Funeral Wednesday
Gay W. Hanks, 59, died suddenly in his home on rural route 3, Decatur, at 2:30 a. m. yesterday.
Mr. Hanks was born in Decatur, Dec. 14, 1885. A son of Seth Columbus and Susan Bradshaw Hanks, he was a fifth cousin of Abraham Lincoln.
He had been ill since his retirement from operating an auto repair shop on South Oakland avenue five years ago, but was downtown in Decatur Saturday. A coroner's inquiry will be conducted today.
He leaves his wife, the former Mrs. Lelia Ann Whittington; twin sons, John, Decatur, and Tech Sgt. William E., Ft. Benning, Ga; three brothers, Shirly and Claude, Decatur, and Virgil, St. Petersburg, Fla., and two sisters, Mrs. Mabel Garriott, Oreana, and Mrs. Ina Crossman, Harristown.
Funeral services will be conduted in Moran & Sons funeral home at 1:30 p. m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Sharon Cemetery at Wyckles. Friends may call at Morans' after 4 p. m. today.
