BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Joseph Pendleton (son of Capt. James, of Major Brian), was born at Sudbury, Mass. 29 December, 1661*, and died at Westerly, RI. 18 September, 1706. On the 17th of September 1679, Joseph Pendleton took the oath of allegiance to the colony of Rhode Island, Westerly, on the same day that his father became a citizen there. In 1697, he was constable of the town and was involved with father in 1699 in the trouble with Gov. Cranston. In 1698, 1699, 1704, and 1705, he was chosen to apportion the rates (assessor of taxes). 2 February 1698/99 Joseph Pendleton of Faversham, alias Westerly, RI. deeds to Nicholas "Moorey", two acres of land Portsmouth, NH. "One acre of which was given to my brother James Pendleton" (Rockingham Co., NH., Deeds, ix, 321). Three days later, Joseph gave another deed to Nicholas "Moorey" of Taunton, Mass., for two acres of land lying on the Great Island in Portsmouth. "One acre that was Philip Eussel's in his life time, the other was given to my brother James Pendleton." (Ibid., ii, 55.) These deeds appear to have been for the same property. On the 24th of May, 1702, Joseph Pendleton was admitted to First Church of Stonington (Ch. Rec.). 25th of June, 1701, he was elected Town Clerk of Westerly, for one year. He was again elected on the 25th of June, 1702, and re-elected the four years following. In 1703, he was styled Ensign. He was a grand juryman in 1706 (West. Rec.). Joseph's handwriting, which appears in the old town records in these years, is remarkably legible; his penmanship was far in advance of that of the average Town Clerk of those days. Joseph Pendleton married (1st) at Westerly, RI., 8 July, 1696 {to} Deborah Minor, daughter of Ephraim and Hannah Avery Minor. She died, 8 September, 1697 (West. Rec.). He married (2nd) at Westerly, 11 December, 1700 {to} Patience Potts, daughter of William, 12 August, 1683. Not long after Joseph's death she married (2nd), as his second wife, 28 April, 1707 {to} Samuel Rogers. The following 8th of June, Samuel Rogers gave bond to administer estate of Joseph Pendleton, and a draft of 202 acres was laid out to him, "In the behalf of Joshua Pendleton, his son-in-law [step-son], it being part of ye Land held in possession by Capt. James Pendleton deceased." (W. L. E., ii, 33.). On the 26th of April 1731, William and Joseph Pendleton of Westerly, gave to Samuel Rogers and his wife Patience, mother to William and Joseph, receipt for all their legacies in the will of their father, Joseph Pendleton.
