"Super Dad," Harold Reid Smith Sr. went home to attend a big family reunion in his honour Sunday, November 16, 2008, at the earthly age of 93. He was born October 5, 1915, in Cardston, Alberta, Canada. He grew up on a farm in Hillspring where he learned to milk cows, harvest grain and work hard.
At age 21, he was tired of the cold winters in Canada, so he followed his brother and sister to Southern California. After working there for several years, he joined the US Navy, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was in the Seabee's and stationed in Guam for part of the war and then back to Southern California, where he met his eternal companion, Virginia May Schneider on a blind date. He worked as a fumigator in pest control until he retired. He lived most of his life in Canoga Park, California.
At the age 62, moved to Liberty, Mississippi to be with his grandchildren and where he and Virginia served a special mission for 22 years. Harold and Virginia then moved to St George in 1999, where he continued to serve in the church and be an exemplary home teacher. He has served the youth for years in scouting and received many scouting awards including the prestigious Silver Beaver. After retiring the first time, he became an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and served the community on the volunteer ambulance service. He also served as the First Aid person for Summer Camps in both Mississippi and Utah, where the boys called him "Doc."
After putting his hand to the plow when he was in his mid thirties, he has never looked back. Serving many stake and special missions, he was always there when work needed to be done. He will be missed greatly for his humor, smile and faithfulness.
He is survived by his three children; Reid (Vivian) of Kooskia, Idaho, Verne (Lynn) of Denver, Colorado, and daughter, Claire (Craig) Smith of Antioch, California; 18 grandchildren and 37 great grandchildren; two brothers, three sisters and nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Virginia; his parents, William and Clara Sloan Smith; five brothers, Wallace, Hugh, Sloan, Keith and Richard.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 22, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at the Snow Canyon 13th Ward Chapel, 1610 N. Dixie Downs Rd., St. George, UT. There will be a viewing Friday, November 21, 2008, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Spilsbury Mortuary, and again Saturday, from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m. prior to services at the Chapel. Interment will take place at the Tonaquint Cemetery.
