He was a 1935 graduate of Lincoln High School, Lincoln, NE. He took drafting and architectural extension studies through the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE. He was a civil engineer with the CB&Q Railroad for 30 years before retiring. He was an accomplished artist in woodcarving and bronze works and was a member of the Lincoln Woodcarver's Club. He was active in the First Covenant Church in Lincoln for many years and later attended Lincoln Bercan Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marian E. Gronquist, and son, Jerry J. Gronquist.
Survivors include his daughters, Judy (Ken) Harms, Bella Vista, AR; Susan (George) Nelson, Atlanta, Georgia; daughter-in-law, Nancy Gronquist, Louisville, Colorado; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
