This is the side view of the stone that John Godfrey and Mary Pittaway his wife shared. This emblem was affixed in 1997 at the sesquicentennial of the arrival of the pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley.

Married 2nd: Olina Thalseth Date: 14 Feb 1875 , Clarkston, Utah Born: Norway John and Mary were baptized in 1848 . They were shunned by former friends, and John lost his job. He tried to find work, but everywhere they went it was the same. He finally found work in the salt works while Mary made cheese at home and sold it. They finally decided to leave for America . Their oldest son left for the Valley in 1860 , and a year later, John and Mary joined him. While they were still in England , John helped organize branches of the church and did much missionary work. He was promised that his family would be able to go to the valley. A way was opened so they were able go. Upon their arrival, they found that their son George had built a log cabin and made some furniture for them. In the spring of 1863 , the family moved to Chalk Creek (now Coalville ) and rented a farm. After a freeze destroyed their crop, they moved to Wellsville in Cache County . They stayed a month before moving on to Mendon , where they spent the winter. The next year they moved to Clarkston where they started a farm. Indian problems drove most of the town to move to Smithfield . The men would return to Clarkston to work their farms. President Young told them to return to Clarkston and remain there, so a fort was built for protection. John was instrumental in getting his parents to come to Utah . A friend told of her sister who wanted to come to the valley. John and Mary talked it over and finally sent for the young woman. John married her and they all lived together for a time until Mary said he should make Olina another home and live with her. He asked if he could return home to die later on, but Mary said no.
