James Asberry Barber was the son of Francis Asberry ("Frank") & Ann Emeline ("Emily") (Collinsworth) Barber. He was born in the community of High Hill in Neshoba County, Mississippi. James' paternal grandparents were James Barber & Annie Jane Nancy (Simmons) Barber, and his maternal grandparents were James Collinsworth & Nancy Sarah Tolbert/Talbot.

James Barber married Mary Lucinda ("Cindy") Rushing, daughter of Barnabus "Strickland" & Mary Baldwin (Gregory) Rushing, on 21 Dec. 1876 in Leake County, Mississippi. They had ten children together, including the first two who died in infancy.

In the early to mid-1890s James Barber and his family moved west to Van Zandt County, Texas, settling just southeast of the town of Edgewood. Less than a decade later James died of pneumonia after having been exposed to cold weather while farming. Cindy raised their children alone, never remarrying.
