Ralph was the fifth of eight children. As a youth, he worked as a newsboy for the daily paper. As an adult, he was employed by the Central Railroad of New Jersey as a clerk in the freight office. On June 4, 1921, he married Vera P. Davis in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.
